Welcome to the first e-news for 2011

People Plus hopes that everyone enjoyed their Christmas break and our thoughts are with those that have been effected by the recent flooding and cyclone.

Chinchilla Melon Festival

Last weekend Paul, Kirstie and Missy attended the Chinchilla Melon Festival.

untitledThe Festival started in 1994 after the community was suffering from a long term drought, it seems strange now to be celebrating the event after the recent devastating floods! Held every two years the festival offers local markets, a beach party (man made beach!), street parade, poets’ breakfast, a day of melon games and much more! The biggest watermelon weighed in 50.4kg’s and sold at auction for over $10,000.

This year People Plus were corporate sponsors for the event and volunteered throughout the day. Paul had his celebrity moment when pulling Lisa Curry down the Melon Skiing course. Even 37 degree heat couldn’t keep people away, with the town more than doubling in numbers during the weekend.

The funds raised throughout the event will support the local community and charities.

In this addition we will be discussing the Paid Parental Leave that commenced in January 2011.

Paid Parental Leave

The Paid Parental Leave scheme entitles eligible persons to a maximum of 18 weeks government-funded paid parental leave at the federal minimum wage (currently $570/week before tax) if they have a child born or adopted on or after 1 January 2011. PPL is not subject to superannuation or payroll tax and is paid on top of any Paid Parental Leave that your employer may offer.

The Paid Parental Leave payments can be made by your employer or the Family Assistance Office, however all payments after the 1st of July 2011 will be made by the employer.

Who is eligible?

  • You have a baby or adopt after  1 January 2011

  • You are the primary carer of a newborn or the initial primary carer of an adopted child

  • You have an individual income of $150,000 a year or less

  • You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident

  • Paid_Parental_Leave
  • Will be on leave or otherwise not working from the time they become the child’s primary carer

  • You have met the Paid Parental Leave scheme work test before the birth or adoption takes place

-     Been engaged  in work continuously for at least 10 out of the 13 months prior to the birth or adoption       of the child

-     Worked at least 330 hours in the 10 month period and had no more than 8 weeks unpaid break               between working days

The PPL is offered to part-time, fixed, casual, seasonal and full-time employees

Paid Parental Leave or Baby Bonus

When you have a newborn child or adopt a child you can choose to receive the baby bonus or paid parental leave. If you choose the paid parental leave you will on average receive around $2000 more than if you choose the baby bonus, after tax and Family Assistance interactions are taken into account. However if you have twins you are entitled to Paid Parental Leave for one child and the Baby Bonus for the other.

For more information relating to Paid Parental Leave please contact Missy 07) 392 4533 or the Family Assistance Office 13 61 50

Spend some time finding out some background information on the company you are applying for. It is always good to know about a prospective employer and what services they offer. If there is something you are unsure about and would like to know, ask the interviewer.
